First of all the goal of Release and Deployment Management is to deploy releases into production. The service has to be available and enabled for using to deliver value to the costumer.

It is well known that a well planned and implemented release will make a significant improvements on the organization's service costs.

The release should consider the following concepts:

  • Deployments plans are needed. They should be clear and comprehensive. All the changes involved should be considered. Notes and Attachments can be used to document this.
  • The release is constructed, installed and tested according to the plan. Specific tasks can be created to follow the progress of each release procedure.
  • The release should consider the CIs involved.
  • A release type and release unit should be considered while planning. According to the release type and unit the user will know where the release is completed.


According to ITIL the Release lifecylce is composed by seven phases:

  1. Initiation
  2. New Environment Request
  3. Quality Assurance
  4. Release Configuration and Build
  5. Operational Readiness
  6. Implementation
  7. Post-Implementation
